While some may define clean labels as verbiage containing the natural source, others, like Whole Foods, may decide it means a product or ingredient cannot contain certain items and create a “no-no” list that goes beyond what can be read on a label.

Among those moms, 88% said they would be willing to pay more for a product using naturally derived colors. When asked to choose blindly between artificial and naturally derived colors in UHT products, almost 90% instinctively chose naturally derived colors, citing the “fluorescent or neon” appearance of synthetic colors.
